Behind the scenes

Directing BBC News' coverage of the Man Booker Prize award ceremony has become an annual fixture in the diary.

Always a fun OB, I learnt so much the first time I directed it (back in 2010), I've been able to use that experience to inform every year since.

Since then, we've been looking at ways to enhance our coverage.  In 2012 we added one of the "Q Ball" remote cameras we originally bought for the London 2012 Olympic Games to the kit list.

We also succeeded in persuading the event organisers to allow us to use a hand-held radio camera – which, free of it's sticks – enabled us to get intimate and immediate reaction from the nominated authors pre and post announcement.

Last year, BBC Radio 4's Arts Correspondent Rebecca Jones, took on the presenting duties.  Stepping in front of the camera for the first time in about 10 years, I really enjoyed working closely with Rebecca – briefing her on the technical and practical aspects of the production.
